The process of applying siding to the exterior of a structure is referred to as siding installation. Once the framing of the house is completed, the next step is to install the sheathing. This typically involves attaching 4×8 sheets of plywood to the frame using nails. However, it is important to note that plywood is not inherently water resistant and therefore requires additional protection. This is achieved by applying a moisture barrier, also known as an underlayment, to the sheathing.

Upon completion of the underlayment installation and proper sealing of all seams, windows, and doors, our team proceeds with the implementation of external trim elements including Azek, j-channel, starter strips and flashing. Subsequently, the installation of siding commences.

The installation of siding follows a top-down methodology, utilizing galvanized nails that are resistant to rust for secure fastening to the structure’s frame. Each course is meticulously installed, with overlapping of previous courses to prevent water infiltration and ensure proper flow down the exterior surface. A moisture barrier is also employed to prevent any water infiltration behind the siding. The process continues in this manner until the top course is reached.

It is important to note that each type of siding material requires specific installation techniques. To ensure proper installation and prevent water damage, it is crucial to select a contractor that possesses expertise and experience in the specific material being used, such as fiber cement. In our experience, improper installation is a prevalent cause of water damage during home inspections.

It is also important to note that the installation process varies depending on the specific style of siding being utilized. For example, the installation of vinyl board and batten is distinct from that of vinyl horizontal plank or vinyl cedar shake impressions. It is crucial to select a contractor with expertise in the specific style being installed.
